Mixed Magic Theatre of Pawtucket, RI received the prestigious American Masterpieces grant to present When Mahalia Sings, a musically infused play about the life and works of the "Queen of Gospel Music," Mahalia Jackson. Jackson was the world's greatest gospel artist and throughout her distinguished career, she remained true to her musical and spiritual roots.
This project is intent on exposing audiences to a legendary artist and political activist who brought gospel music into the mainstream at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1957. Mahalia Jackson was the first Gospel Music Artist to win the prestigious Grammy Award.
When Mahalia Sings provides a refreshing perspective on the impact of music on the world. Mahalia Jackson served as a good will ambassador internationally. This is the beginning celebration ( 100th birthday October 26, 2011 ) of a woman whose voice and conviction left a footprint in American history for all Americans.
